Every year 5 March is celebrated as Physical education and Sport Day in our country. This date is marked according to Order of President of Azerbaijan Republic Ilham Aliyev dated March 4, 2005 on instituting “Physical education and Sport Day”. It is not coincidence to celebrate this day on March 5. On March 5, 1995, Great leader Heydar Aliyev met with winners of World and European championship at Baku Sport Center, established Sport Foundation and founded new strategy at the advancement of physical education and sport. We could say with honor that Azerbaijan turned to be one of the sport centers of the world. Present development level of Azerbaijani sport is an indicator of care and attention of Ilham Aliyev to this field. Undoubtedly, high education institutions also call special attention to this sphere. Universities of our Republic contribute to the improvement of sport, being inspired of state care to this field.

On February 7, interfaculty competitions started on 3 types of sport (draughts, chess and backgammon) among collaborators of Sumgayit State University and Sumgayit State Technical College under SSU. At first, associates started to play on draughts. 8 teams joined to the competition and it was held in 2 subgroups. Engineering faculty awarded I place, Chemistry and Biology faculty II place and History and Geography faculty III place. The competitions will keep on from February 7 to 14.
