On November 1, with the organizational support of the Department of Ecology of the Faculty of Chemistry and Biology, students of I-IV courses visited the "National Center for Hazardous Waste Management" (Waste Landfill) and got acquainted with the processes taking place there.

The director of the National Center for Hazardous Waste Management, Chingiz Mehdiyev, and his staff told teachers and students about the need to create such a center, its history, materials for the manufacture of containers, and classification of hazardous waste.

It was noted that Hazardous Waste LLC was established in 2004 by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources with the goal of neutralizing soils contaminated with mercury in the city of Sumgayit. The company continues to carry out its activities on the disposal of waste hazardous to life. Hazardous waste is disposed in special containers in compliance with all safety measures. So that the containers did not have contact with the soil and the environment, they were isolated with high-quality geomembrane (polymer) and geotextile materials. Hazardous Waste LLC neutralizes currently contaminated soils, drill cuttings (oil, mercury, chemicals, etc.), excluding explosive and radioactive substances, as well as expired food products, medical waste, etc. To check the effect of containers on the environment on the territory of the landfill is constantly carried out comprehensive environmental monitoring. It should be noted that the above hazardous wastes, in order to avoid external influences, are delivered to the landfill in special vehicles. The priority area of activity of “Hazardous Wastes” is to minimize the harmful effects of wastes on the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
