On May 28, 1918, the independence of Azerbaijan was declared and the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was established. Despite the fact that 103 years have passed since that day, the Republic Day is celebrated in our country with great solemnity. On the occasion of this significant day, a series of events are held in online format at Sumgayit State University, as well as throughout the country.

On May 26, an online event dedicated to May 28 - Republic Day was organized by the Student Youth Organization at the Faculty of Chemistry and Biology of SSU.

The event was opened by the dean of the faculty, associate professor Mahal Muradov, who congratulated the staff and students on the occasion of May 28 - Republic Day and informed the participants about the historical significance of this day. He noted that the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, which existed for a short time, turned 1918-1920 into a glorious period of our history. The dean noted that the establishment of the first democratic republic in the Muslim East in the early twentieth century by the Azerbaijani people with rich statehood traditions was an important historical achievement. He noted that it was raised as an official state flag at the session of the Supreme Assembly, and the Great Leader gave political value to the activities of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic after coming to power for the second time in our country.

Mahal Muradov also stressed that President Ilham Aliyev successfully continues this policy of the National Leader. The head of state has repeatedly proved that he is a great patron of national and spiritual values and historical heritage. On the basis of the Order of President Ilham Aliyev dated May 16, 2017 "On the 100th anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic", the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the republic was widely celebrated in our country. The proclamation of the "Year of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic" was a clear example of the high respect and esteem shown to the founders of the republic.

Then the senior teacher of the Department of history of the peoples of Azerbaijan and Eastern Europe Parviz Jafarov delivered speech on "Activity of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic", students of the faculty Shafa Isayeva spoke on "The establishment of the Azerbaijan People's Republic" Anar Gullarli "The Azerbaijan People's Republic in the system of international relations" and said that May 28 entered the history of the Azerbaijani people as a bright page forever. Despite the fact that the first democratic republic of our people, which for centuries longed for independence and national freedom, lived only a short time - only 23 months, its period of activity is one of the most memorable stages in the history of our national statehood. The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, the first democratic republic in the Muslim East, emerged as a logical result of the centuries-old socio-economic, socio-political and cultural development of our country, the processes of national awakening and revival of our people. Although the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic collapsed on April 27, 1920, it was an indicator of the level of political consciousness, intellectual and cultural potential of our people.
