An online seminar on patriotism was organized by the Faculty of History and Geography of Sumgayit State University on August 30.

First, the memory of all the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the freedom and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan was commemorated with a minute of silence.

Opening the seminar, the rector of the university, Professor Elkhan Huseynov, said that the Second Karabakh War was the embodiment of the invincibility of our people, the strength of our state. With the Supreme Command of Mr. Ilham Aliyev, our army has created a great chronicle of our history in this 44-day war. With this victory, both our lands were liberated and Azerbaijan created new realities in the region. Azerbaijani lands have been under occupation for about 30 years.

Although the whole world recognizes the occupied Karabakh and surrounding regions as the territory of Azerbaijan, and the relevant resolutions were adopted by the UN Security Council, no international pressure was exerted on Armenia during this period. On the contrary, most international organizations, which mediate in the solution of the problem, have pursued a policy of double standards and supported the policy of occupation. However, not a single step was taken back from the national interests of Azerbaijan. Our republic has never reconciled with the occupation of its lands. President Ilham Aliyev has always stated that our lands will definitely be liberated. It was also known that increasing the combat capabilities of our army, acquiring the most modern weapons and military equipment served this purpose. Thus, the dynamic development and rise of our country under the wise leadership of President Ilham Aliyev also created historical conditions for the liberation of our lands from occupation, and finally, the Great Patriotic War fulfilled the greatest dream of our people, put an end to the only painful problem of our state.

At Sumgayit State University, our martyrs are always commemorated, martyrs' families are visited, care and attention is paid to them. A group of them went to military service and took part in the battles against the enemy in the ranks of our victorious army.

The rector also noted that a memorial complex was created in the yard of Sumgayit State University to immortalize the memories of students and graduates who rose to the summit of martyrdom. Along with our graduates and students who took part in the First Karabakh War, the installation of marble photos of our students and graduates who died in the April battles and the 44-day war since September 27 plays an important role in patriotic education of students. May God have mercy on all our martyrs and heal all our wounded soldiers and officers!

Professor Shirkhan Salimov, Head of the Department of History of the Peoples of Azerbaijan and Eastern Europe, made a report on the topic at the seminar. He noted that as a result of the successful continuation of the army-building strategy founded by national leader Heydar Aliyev by the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, President Ilham Aliyev, today the Azerbaijani Armed Forces have become the most powerful army in the region. During the 44-day war, the occupied territories of Azerbaijan were liberated from the Armenian aggressors by the Supreme Command of Mr. Ilham Aliyev. This glorious victory, which is one of the brightest and most memorable pages in the history of our people, is based on the leadership qualities of President Ilham Aliyev, as well as the achievements of Azerbaijan in the socio-economic, political, cultural and military spheres.

Professor Shirkhan Salimov also noted that the organization of such seminars plays an important role in instilling in our youth feelings of love for the Fatherland, promoting the spirit of national patriotism among them, the formation of national character and national morality.

Other speakers at the seminar spoke about the Great Return process under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev after the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. On behalf of the people of Azerbaijan, they once again thanked the participants of the Great Patriotic War. It was emphasized that the history written by them will be passed on to future generations after us as a heroic chronicle. It was noted that the leadership of our state pays special attention to the families of martyrs and veterans. Their way of life becomes an example, their memories are immortalized.

At the end of the seminar, a stand entitled "The Road to Glorious Victory" was opened.
