In early April 2016  when the frontline positions and settlements of Azerbaijan were subjected to intensive artillery fire by the Armenian armed forces, our army units prevented provocations with a counterattack. It went down in history as the April War.

On April 4, events dedicated to the 6th anniversary of the April battles were held at different faculties of Sumgayit State University.

First, the participants visited the memorial of students and graduates erected in the courtyard of the university and laid flowers in front of the monument. They commemorated the souls of our martyrs who died for the freedom and territorial integrity of our homeland with a minute of silence.

The deans of the faculties gave detailed information about the return of a part of our occupied lands under the leadership of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev in the 4-day war, which went down in history as the April battles. In April 2016, it was reported that the Armenian armed forces committed another armed provocation against our state, but as a result of a successful counter-offensive by the mighty Azerbaijani Army, the enemy suffered heavy blows. They noted that in the April battles, a 2015 graduate of the Faculty of Physics and Power Engineering, Mikayil Vahabov, born in 1993, heroically rose to the peak of martyrdom in the battles for the territorial integrity of our lands. The memory of our martyred graduate is always cherished by university staff and students, and his heroism is promoted as an example to future generations. The "April War" is of great importance in the modern history of the Azerbaijani people. It was in these heavy battles that the serious military success achieved over the occupying Armenia laid the foundation for Azerbaijan"s great historical victory in the glorious 44-day Patriotic War four years later.

Other speakers at the event spoke about the causes, consequences and historical significance of the April battles. They said that the April victory became a celebration of the army-people"s unity. This union became an "iron fist" in the Great Patriotic War and ensured the mobilization of millions of Azerbaijani people for a common goal. From this point of view, the April battles were the beginning of a decisive stage in the path of the Azerbaijani people to a historic victory. The April battles were an expression of the close unity of the people around our president, as well as the victory march of our national army.

Then, poems and songs dedicated to the April battles were performed by the students, and a video about the bravery of our soldiers during the counterattack of our National Army in the April battles was shown.
