On April 11, students of Sumgayit State University and Sumgayit State Technical College under the university started inter-faculty competitions in 5 sports (table tennis, checkers, chess, volleyball and basketball).

The competition was opened by the chairman of the Free Trade Union Committee of the university, associate professor Elmar Khalilov, who greeted the participants on behalf of the rector of the university and wished them success. He noted that in recent years, the attention and care paid to the development of sports in our country has expanded. The recognition of Azerbaijan as a country of sports in the world and its achievements in this field are highly appreciated by the international sports community. It is also an example of the international interest in the development of sports in Azerbaijan.

Elmar Khalilov also noted that national leader Heydar Aliyev had set specific tasks for organizations directly involved in achieving the popularity of sports in Azerbaijan, the development and promotion of physical culture and sports in a wide geographical area, high achievements and training world-famous athletes. As a result of important measures taken in a very short time, our athletes gradually achieved great victories, and our tricolor flag began to fly in the international arena. The world championships and European games already held in Azerbaijan have a series of character. As a result of a successful sports policy, Azerbaijan is also recognized by the world sports community as a serious partner, and our athletes as a major competitor. A healthy generation is being formed in the country by ensuring the popularity of sports by the state. Of course, this formed generation also means a healthy future for our country. The comprehensive, competitive upbringing of modern youth is a continuation of the state"s successful youth policy. Our youth is distinguished not only by sports, but also by an active role in all spheres and plays an important role in the promotion of socio-political, socio-economic events. All this is the result of the wide range of opportunities, high attention and care created by president Ilham Aliyev and First Vice President Mehriban Aliyeva for youth activities. The special attention and care paid by the state to sports in Azerbaijan has also had a significant impact on the sports life of Sumgayit State University. Along with science and education, great success is being achieved here in the field of sports. It is very gratifying that our student-athletes also have a large part in the medal treasury of Azerbaijan.

It should be noted that the competition was first started by students participating in table tennis and 8 teams tested their skills.
