On May 27, the General history olympiad dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of National Leader Heydar  Aliyev was held among students of IX-XI grades of Sumgayit city secondary schools under the organization of the department of History and its teaching methodology of the faculty of History and geography of SSU.

First, the dear memory of the Great Leader was commemorated with a minute's silence. Vice-rector for Social affairs and public relations associate professor Elmar  Khalilov opened the Olympiad and spoke about the importance and purpose of the Olympiad and the necessary role of National Leader Heydar Aliyev in the history of Azerbaijan. He said that Heydar  Aliyev, the founder of independent Azerbaijan, who conquered great peaks  in all spheres of social and political life, was the most incomparable service to history and the people. The time when the Great Leader was in power entered our historical memory as the years of rapid growth of Azerbaijani education, the vice-rector stated that more than 15,000 young Azerbaijanis were sent to study in the most prestigious universities of the USSR, the material and technical base of educational institutions was strengthened.

Then, deputy dean of the faculty of History and geography associate professor Osman Hajiyev, head of the department of History and its teaching methodology associate professor  Sona  Maharramova spoke about the advantages of history  in the life of mankind, including individual nations, from ancient times to the present. In this sense, the General history olympiad  was held in connection with the "Year of Heydar Aliyev".

After the speeches, the competition started.
