On February 25, Sumgayit State University (SSU) hosted an event called “Khojaly Lessons” to commemorate the 33rd anniversary of the Khojaly Genocide. First, the faculty and students laid carnations in front of the monument erected in memory of 19 SSU graduates who became a martyr for the liberation of our lands in front of the administrative building of the university. Then, the event participants visited the bust of National Leader Heydar Aliyev erected in the lobby of the university. Then they viewed an exhibition of photographs and documentary materials related to the Khojaly Genocide. The event continued in the assembly hall of the university. After a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the genocide, SSU Acting Rector Professor Aminaga Sadigov said that the Khojaly genocide that occurred at the end of the last century is one of the most serious crimes directed not only against the Azerbaijani people, but also against humanity. A.Sadigov also brought to attention that for the first time, a political and legal assessment of this tragedy was given by the Milli Majlis in 1994 at the initiative of the National Leader of our people Heydar Aliyev. A decision was adopted on the “Day of the Khojaly Genocide” and an appeal was made to the world community and international organizations to take effective steps against armenian terrorism. Noting that as a result of the consistent, purposeful and multifaceted successful policy of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, resolutions on the recognition of the Khojaly genocide have already been adopted in many countries of the world, Professor Aminaga Sadigov noted that the Heydar Aliyev Foundation has done important work in terms of disseminating the truths of Khojaly to the world and giving an objective assessment to this terrible event, and numerous humanitarian projects have been implemented under the leadership of Mehriban Aliyeva. The “Justice for Khojaly!” campaign, implemented since 2008 at the initiative of the Vice President of the Foundation, Leyla Aliyeva, has caused a serious resonance in the international community. Stressing that our heroes who became martyrs during the 44-day Patriotic War and the “anti-terrorist operations” conducted in Karabakh in September 2023 under the leadership of the Victorious Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, as well as the victims of the Khojaly tragedy, were avenged on the battlefield, A.Sadigov called on his colleagues and students to unite closely around the head of state and support his policy with practical actions for the sake of further strengthening our country. A video clip was shown dedicated to the Khojaly tragedy at the event. Then, the Vice-Rector for Social Affairs and Public Relations of SSU, Associate Professor Elmar Khalilov made a speech and provided information about the horrors that occurred during the genocide and the difficult moments of the residents of Khojaly, the crimes committed by the armenian invaders, as well as the struggle of the Azerbaijani people for victory. Then, the reports of the Dean of the Faculty of History and Geography of SSU, Professor Adil Bakhshaliyev on “The Khojaly Genocide is the Tragedy of the Century”, Jeyhun Gasimbeyli, a teacher of the Department of History of Azerbaijan and the Peoples of Eastern Europe, on “Return to Khojaly”, and Zhala Zamanova, a resident of Khojaly, a 5th year student of the Faculty of History and Geography, on “What I Heard about the Khojaly Tragedy” were listened to.
