On February 28, an event dedicated to the 37th anniversary of the Sumgayit events was held at Sumgayit State University, organized by the Student Trade Union Committee. At the event, Vice-Rector for Social Affairs and Public Relations, Associate Professor Elmar Khalilov spoke about the events that took place in Sumgayit on February 27-29, 1988, and provided information about the causes of the events that were part of the “Greater Armenia” fantasy, referring to specific facts. Elmar Khalilov recalled the glorious Victory won by the Azerbaijani Army in 2020 under the leadership of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, and stated that genocide, deportations and provocations against Azerbaijanis were prevented. Then, the researcher of the Sumgayit events, professor of the Department of Foreign Languages of the SSU, consultant Ramazan Mammadov made a speech and provided detailed information about the main reasons for the Sumgayit events that took place on February 28, 1988, the groups that committed and encouraged these events, as well as nationalist movements from armenia. He emphasized that although the Sumgayit events were one of the scenarios of the armenian separatists, there were broader reasons behind these events. He noted that Eduard Grigoryan, the organizer of the events, was armenian and that he alone killed five armenians in Sumgayit. As a result of the riots in the city of Sumgayit, 32 people lost their lives, 26 of whom were Armenians and 6 were Azerbaijanis. At the end of his speech, he noted that the forces organizing the Sumgayit events had been preparing in advance. He emphasized that there were enough facts to give a political and legal assessment to the Sumgayit events. He added that after the return of the Great Leader Heydar Aliyev to power in 1993, along with a number of issues, the Sumgayit events were clarified. The causes of those events were deeply investigated and the real truth was revealed. Then the event continued in the form of a discussion. The Dean of the Faculty of History and Geography, Professor Adil Bakhshaliyev, the Chairman of the Trade Union Committee of the university, Nemat Ibayev, and the Director of the Center of Excellence, Ali Rzayev, made speeches on the topic and noted that the Sumgayit events are not just a moment, but the result of a long-term period that shaped the history of modern Azerbaijan. Such events are very important in terms of understanding these events by discussing the analysis, causes and consequences of that period.
