A scientific-practical conference entitled "March 1918 Genocide in Historical Research" dedicated to the 108th anniversary of the genocide of Azerbaijanis was held in the city of Guba, operating under the State Service for the Protection, Development and Restoration of Cultural Heritage under the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Azerbaijan, with the organization of the "Genocide Memorial Complex" and the Faculty of History and Geography of Sumgayit State University (SSU) and the support of the Student Trade Union Committee. The conference which began with the playing of the national anthem, was followed by a minute of silence in memory of our martyrs and genocide victims who died for our territorial integrity. Director of the Complex, Dr. Rakhshenda Bayramova opened the conference with an introductory speech, emphasized in her speech that the March 1918 genocide was one of the most tragic pages in the history of Azerbaijan. She stated that the legal and political assessment of the events of the 1918 genocide was given by the Decree “On the Genocide of Azerbaijanis” signed by the National Leader Heydar Aliyev on March 26, 1998, and in this document, the genocide of Azerbaijanis by Armenians was officially declared for the first time. Then, the Dean of the Faculty of History and Geography of Sumgayit State University, Professor Adil Bakhshaliyev spoke about the true essence of the genocide and aggressive policy carried out against our people by Armenian nationalists over the past 200 years, as well as on March 31, 1918. He noted that this genocide committed against Azerbaijanis is one of the bloodiest pages of history. As a result of the March genocide, about 12 thousand Azerbaijanis were killed in Baku alone, more than 50 thousand Turkish-Muslims were exterminated in the South Caucasus as a whole, and tens of thousands of people went missing. At the conference, Head of the Department of History, Geography and Methodology of SSU, Associate Professor Sona Maharramova spoke on the topic “Ethnic Cleansing and Deportations against Azerbaijanis in Western Azerbaijan in 1918” and presented an analysis of the tragic events that occurred at that time based on historical sources, and spoke about the causes and consequences of violence, massacres and forced displacements carried out against the Azerbaijani population. Then, associate professor of the Department of History, Geography and Methodology of the university, Yusifali Hasanov delivered reports on “March 31, 1918 Genocide: Massacres Committed in Baku”, associate professor of the Department of History, Geography and Methodology, Samir Karimli, “Massacres Committed in the Shamakhi Region of Azerbaijan in 1918”, a fourth-year student of the Faculty of History and Geography, Sona Hasanova “Massacres Committed in the Guba Region in 1918”, a fourth-year student of the Faculty of History and Geography, Rahil Jafarov, “Massacres Committed in the Karabakh Region of Azerbaijan in 1918”, and a senior lecturer of the Department of History, Geography and Methodology, Nofel Abdullayev, “Legal and Political Assessment of the 1918 Genocide of Azerbaijanis” made presentations. At the end, teachers and students were informed about the documents, photographic materials and archaeological finds exhibited in the museum of the Complex related to the genocide.
