On October 5, a ceremony was held at the Sumgait State University on the occasion of International Teachers’ Day. Professor Elkhan Huseynov, rector of the University made an opening speech and congratulated the teachers who have a hard profession with the International Teachers’ Day. He noted that on October 5, 1966, at a conference co-organized by the UNESCO and International Labor Organization, the first international document entitled “Status of the teachers” was adopted which determined the terms of the professional activity of the teachers. Since 1994, this date was established by the UNESCO as the International Teachers’ Day and now the 5th of October is celebrated as the professional holiday of the teachers in more than 100 countries. The decree on celebrating this holiday in the independent Azerbaijan was issued by the national leader Heidar Aliyev. The rector emphasized that the profession of a teacher is a profession from which the entire society benefits, therefore each teacher shall be able to carry such a heavy burden on his/her shoulders. The rector also talked about the educational reforms implemented in our country under the leadership of President ilham Aliyev and stated that integration to international education system has become an integral component of the state policy realized in Azerbaijan. The pedagogical, scientific and material base formed in the past years will serve Azerbaijan for many years to come. At the ceremony dedicated to this professional holiday, a group of teachers were awarded with special diplomas from ATIAHI Republic Committee. The ceremony continued with performances of “Sema” dancing group of the University and students.
