An open lesson dedicated to the 40th anniversary of Sumgait-Ludwigshafen friendship was held in HeydarAliyev center of the city with the initiative of NigarIsgenderova, professor, foreign languages department of philology faculty and AygunZulfugarova, director of HeydarAliyev center. German language teachers of SSU AlmazMehdiyeva and MatanatHamishayeva’s lesson with a group of university students has attracted the attention of visitors. Students participating from seven faculties of the university, HumayMardanli, chief laboratory of the department andLatifaMirzaliyeva, methodologist of statistics section had prepared slides reflecting the chronicle of Sumgait-Ludwigshafen relations. At the lesson, they talked about the friendly relations between two cities and had a look on different periods of the friendship. The friendship is connected with visits to Sumgait by Verner Ludwig, the fromeroberburgomaster and Mr.Bulov, chairman of USSR-Rhine Nekkar Friendship Society in 1977.
The early years (1977-1979) of relationships were characterized with official visits. Thus, ZulfuHajiyev, Chairman of Sumgait city Executive Committee and VagifBayramov, deputy chairman visited Ludwigshafen.
In the early 1980s, a visit by a group of schoolchildren established an intense exchange of pupils and city dwellers. 
The relations between two cities were established mainly by exchange of schoolchildren (especially fromgymnasium named after Carl-Bosch in Ludwigshafen and secondary school №15 in Sumgait), cultural workers and sportsmen. Also, cooperation in economy and medicine, as well as in sport and culture grew. All these tell about cooperation between cities and reflect the joint work of Ludwigshafen and Sumgait in solving problems in various fields.
After the event, at the Scientific Council of SSU, the title of honorary doctorate of the University was presented to E.Lose, oberburgomaster of Ludwigshafen.The head of the executive powerZakirFarajov and E.Lose talked about the level of education in the university and the importance of creating the circumstance for SSU students to improve their language knowledge in Heidelberg University, Germany.
