On October 18, Independence Day – 26th anniversary of restoration of state sovereignty of Azerbaijan was celebrated at Sumgayit State University. The ceremony began with sounding State Anthem of Azerbaijan Republic. Rector of University Professor Elkhan Huseynov commenced the event and notified that, our people stood up for struggle two times in XX century and declared the independence of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic at the beginning of century. Unfortunately, it could live only 23 months. Eventually, after 70 years our people again stood up for struggle and restored its sovereignty by adopting “Constitution Act on State Independence of Azerbaijan Republic” on October 18, in 1991. However, occupation of 20 percent of our lands by Armenians, economic crisis, power struggle of some politicians threatened our sovereignty.
Heydar Aliyev’s deep political experience, management skills and inexhaustible love to his native land saved state sovereignty.  Chaos and anarchy, economic, political and psychological tension occurring in the country were abolished. Great leader could establish independent state like Azerbaijan in such a complicated geopolitical situation. In result of successful foreign policy, ceasefire was achieved in front, on May 12, 1994. On November 12, 1995 legal basis of new state establishment was founded in the state by adoption of Azerbaijan Constitution. Thus, most prosperous period began in terms of strengthening independence of Azerbaijan, its eternality and irreversibility. Nowadays, Great leader’s activity in preserving and strengthening our sovereignty is kept up and improved successfully by President Ilham Aliyev. Ilham Aliyev’s policy in this field shows that, Azerbaijan sovereignty is eternal and steadfast!
In the event the following people made speeches accordingly: dean of faculty of History and geography, Professor Adil Bakhshaliyev – “Azerbaijani people is on the ways of State Independence”; associate professor of department of Azerbaijani and Eastern European nations history Bahram Mammadli – “Commencement of National liberation movement of Azerbaijani people”; lecturer of department of History and its teaching methods Sarvan Badalov – “Socio-political situation of Azerbaijan in 1991-1993”; second course student of faculty of Chemistry and biology Guluza Khudayarova – “Heydar Aliyev is an architect of independent Azerbaijan”. They emphasized that, Azerbaijani nation have passed through path of development by relying its national and spiritual values, potential, patriotism and perseverance. Every Azerbaijan citizen believes that, President Ilham Aliyev will ensure the growth of Azerbaijan by his wise policy.
