On February 7, sports (chess, checkers, backgammon) competition was held between co-workers of Sumgayit State University and Sumgayit State Technical College in team and personal, which was dedicated to 100th Anniversary of establishment of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.
Professor Elkhan Huseynov, the Rector of SSU opened the competition and expressed his appreciation to the order of President Ilham Aliyev on declaration of 2018 “The year of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic”. He noted that, the establishment of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was a special event and one of the glorious pages in our statehood history. Restoration of national statehood had a significant role in provision of our freedom and formation of historical memory. ADR founded independent Azerbaijan on the base of democratic principles for the first time in history of our nation. Taking an active part in national statehood history, ADR accelerated economic-political and socio-cultural reformations in 23 months. Establishment of first democratic republic of Muslim East in Azerbaijan is connected with the sense of independence and sovereignty of our nation at the end of XIX-beginning of XX century. Leading figures and intellectuals strengthened those senses, spread the mood of national awakening and revival and all these led to establishment of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. 
Rector emphasized that, a series of events are held in our University, dedicated to 100th Anniversary of ADR. After gaining its independence, great achievements are gained in all fields and in the field of sports. Our sportsmen represent Azerbaijan in international competitions. We could say that, the reforms run in several fields during the administration of Great Leader Heydar Aliyev are successfully carried on by President Ilham Aliyev. All these achievements make Azerbaijan one of the developing countries. He congratulated everyone on this occasion and wished sportsmen success in the competition.
Zakir Mammadov, the head of Sports club of SSU, honored trainer notified that, the traditional spartakiad of personnel of faculties will be held from February 7 to14. At first chess players joined to competition. All faculties participated in the contest held under the guidance of Mirvari Karimova, the trainer of Sports club.
