February 21is celebrated as the International Mother Language Day all over the world. United Nations Organization declared that day International Mother Language Day in November, 1999 by the initiative of ambassador of Bangladesh. But its history goes beyond. 4 people were killed in Pakistan in result of police and military forces’ intervention on February 21, 22 in 1952 in accidents held for protesting prohibition of Bengal language. Bangladesh representatives applied to UNO for naming that day Mother Language Day as a sign of respect to their memories. In General Assembly of UNESCO, February 21 was declared International Mother Language Day and member countries were informed to hold events, conferences and seminars at schools and universities on significance of Mother tongue. 
For this purpose, scientific seminar on “Mother language is our spirituality” was held in the Faculty of Philology of SSU dedicated to this special day. Head of Department of Azerbaijani language and its teaching methods, Ph.D. in philology Boyukkhanim Eminli was the initiator and organizer of the event.
Faculty dean docent Sevinj Hamzayeva, deputy dean Zohra Qafarova, head of Foreign languages department Professor Nigar Isgandarova, head of Department of Azerbaijani and Foreign countries literature Professor Aftandil Mammadov, senior lecturer of Department of Azerbaijani language and its teaching methods Lala Hamzayeva participated in the event. It was noted in the seminar that, Azerbaijani language is our past, present and future. Great leader Heydar Aliyev’s deep love and sensitive attitude towards our language is a great sample for every Azerbaijani person. Preserving purity of native language is a great of importance and keeps its actuality. Everyone should protect his mother tongue.
The students delivered speech about purity of our language, status among world languages and its variety.
