She came to Moscow to study ophthalmology and took a two-year refresher course at the All-Union Central Institute for the Improvement of Physicians to become an ophthalmologist. She was a doctor not only by profession, but also with all her heart, and she held this profession in high esteem and said: "People need a doctor as much as the sun." The prominent scientist was the first in the world to establish a research laboratory for the study of occupational pathology of the visual organ, and in practice laid the foundation for a new direction in the world of science - occupational ophthalmology. In her later scientific activity, Zarifa Aliyeva defended her doctoral dissertation on "The state of the visual organ in the chemical industry of Azerbaijan." reflected.
