ILHAM ALIYEV APPROVES A NEW LAW ON “INDEPENDENCE DAY”
President Ilham Aliyev has approved the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan on “Independence Day”.
According to the law, May 28 was declared Independence Day and October 18 was declared Day of Restoration of Independence.
Independence Day and Day of Restoration of Independence will be celebrated as holidays every year.
The law says:
"On May 28, 1918, the National Council of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic declared the independence of Azerbaijan to the world by signing the Declaration of Independence, continuing the centuries-old traditions of statehood of our people. Important measures have been taken in the field of construction, recognition of the Republic as a subject of the system of international relations, important steps have been taken to protect national interests at the diplomatic level. The laws adopted by the new parliament have played a key role in strengthening national independence, ensuring political, economic and cultural development in the country, and establishing democratic principles. The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, which has existed for only 23 months, has had a significant impact on the formation of democratic traditions in the Muslim East.
On October 18, 1991, the Constitutional Act "On State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan" was adopted. The Constitutional Act referred to the Declaration of Independence of May 28, 1918 and the Declaration of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated August 30, 1991 "On the restoration of state independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan" and established that the Republic of Azerbaijan is the successor of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. Thus, in accordance with the Constitutional Act "On State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan", the people of Azerbaijan restored their independence on October 18, 1991.
October 18, 2021 marks the 30th anniversary of the restoration of the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan. For the first time since 1991, the people of Azerbaijan celebrate this holiday in a completely different way, as a victorious nation that has restored its territorial integrity. From this point of view, it is very important to more accurately express the historically important stages in the history of our statehood, especially the acquisition and restoration of independence, in accordance with their essence and content. "
