DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY
The Department of Biology was established in 2002 under the name of the Department of Natural Sciences. The main goal of the creation of the department was to teach the concepts of modern natural science in all specialties of the university, as well as to create the directions of biology and geography. In the organization of the department prof. AB Mammadov, Assoc. V.S. Ismayilov, Assoc. R.I. Bashirov actively participated. Since 2005, the name of the department has been changed and it has been called Basics of General Biology and Natural Sciences. In 2007, the Department of Basics of General Biology and Natural Sciences was renamed the Department of General Biology, and a part of it was separated and operated under the name of the Department of Experimental Biology. The Department of General Biology was headed by Assoc. R.I. Bashirov, the Department of Experimental Biology was headed by Assoc. A.H. Gadimov. In 2009, the Department of Biology and Geography Teaching Methodology was established under the General Biology, Experimental Biology and Chemistry and Biology Teaching Methodology Departments and it was headed by A.Y. Bakhshaliyev. In 2010, the Department of General Biology was renamed Zoology, and the Department of Experimental Biology was renamed the Department of Botany. The Department of Zoology was headed by Assoc. N.R.Namazov, the Department of Botany was headed by Assoc. A.G.Garayev. In 2013, the Departments of Zoology and Methods of Teaching Biology and Geography were united and named the Department of Biology and Zoology, and the department was headed by A.Y. Bakhshaliyev. Since 2013, by the decision of the Scientific Council, the name of the department has been changed to the Department of Zoology and Human Physiology. According to the decision of the Scientific Council dated 29.03.2017, the Department of Zoology and Human Physiology and the Department of Botany were merged and renamed the Department of Biology and its Teaching Methodology, and from 2024 the department was renamed the Department of Biology. Currently, the department is headed by associate professor Bakhshaliyev Arzu Yelmar oglu.

1 monograph, 9 textbooks, more than 150 scientific articles and report theses, including 25 scientific articles were published in prestigious journals of foreign countries by the employees of the department.
Over the past 5 years, 54 subject programs, including 15 subject programs under the seal of the Ministry of Science and Education, 29 subject programs under the seal of the University Scientific Council, and more than 200 syllabuses have been prepared for the department.The employees of the Department of Biology have scientific relations with Baku State University, Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University, Ganja State University, Lankaran State University, Azerbaijan Medical University, Veterinary Science Research Institute, MSERA Botany, MSERA Institutes of Zoology and MSERA Microbiology, Perm Research Technical University, Pskov State University. 2 employees of the department were awarded the "Progress" medal by the order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Sumgait State University in November 2022, 1 person was awarded the "Advanced Education Worker" badge. One employee was awarded with "Decree of Honor" and "Diploma" by the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan (former Ministry of Education). "Scientists of Tomorrow" 12th Republic Competition "Scientific Experts" Chairman of the Scientific Expertise Commission Associate Professor R. Salimov was awarded with "Thank you note" by the Ministry of Science and Education for his efficient activity in the organization and conduct of the competition.
