On October 8, a scientific and practical conference on the occasion of Independence Day of the Republic of Azerbaijan was held at Sumgayit State University.

The event was opened by the rector of the university, Professor Elkhan Huseynov. He congratulated the conference participants on Independence Day and read a congratulatory letter addressed to the SSU team by co-chair of the Association of Russian-Azerbaijani higher education institutions from the Russian side, the rector of the Ufa State Oil Technical University, academician Ramil Bakhtizin. Professor Elkhan Huseynov noted that Independence Day is a great and significant event in the life of the Azerbaijani people, and spoke about the difficult path to independence that our country has passed. Azerbaijan gained independence twice in a century and declared its sovereignty. However, the Azerbaijan Republic, founded in 1918, lived only 23 months.

The second opportunity came after about 70 years. As a result of the historical events that led to the collapse of the Soviet Union at the end of the 20th century, Azerbaijan regained its independence. On October 18, 1991, at the session of the Supreme Council, a historic document was adopted - the Constitutional Act on State Independence.

The rector also emphasized the role of the national leader Heydar Aliyev in strengthening the independence of the republic and maintaining statehood, spoke about the prosperity of Azerbaijan, which was achieved under his leadership and about the successful continuation of the wise policy of Heydar Aliyev by the current president Ilham Aliyev.
