May is a month rich with the most significant, proud, successful events and beautiful holidays in the history of the Azerbaijani people of the XX century. One of these beautiful days - May 28 Republic Day - the day of the foundation of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, which is solemnly celebrated, studied, revived and gained immortality throughout the country. In this regard, an online event dedicated to the 102nd anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was held at the Faculty of Physics and Electroenergetics of Sumgayit State University.
Opening the event, dean of the Faculty of Physics and Electroenergetics, associate professor Tamella Ahmadova said that May 28, 1918, engraved in golden letters in the history of our people"s struggle for freedom and independence, is a day when every Azerbaijani citizen feels national pride. The people of Azerbaijan, who have been dreaming of freedom and independence for centuries, achieved their dream on May day at the beginning of the last century. For the first time in the East, a free, democratic, independent republic based on secular values was announced to the world. On May 28, 1918, our people were liberated from the colonial slavery of Tsarist Russia, which lasted more than a century, and laid the foundation of the first democratic republic in the East. On May 28, 1918, the Declaration of Independence was adopted, declaring the independence of Azerbaijan. The newly established Azerbaijan Democratic Republic has honorably fulfilled its difficult historical task by working to the best of its ability. The first Parliament and Government of Azerbaijan, the state apparatus were organized, the country"s borders were defined, the flag, anthem and coat of arms were created, the mother tongue was declared the state language, and serious measures were taken in the field of state building. The country"s territorial integrity and national security were ensured, high-capacity military units were established in a short time, state bodies were established in accordance with national requirements and democratic principles, special attention was paid to the development of education and culture, Azerbaijan"s first university was established. The dean also noted that although the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic failed due to the aggression and failed to achieve its goals, the idea of independence, was not forgotten. The people of Azerbaijan have been able to preserve many attributes of national statehood over the past period. The policy successfully pursued by national leader Heydar Aliyev in the republic has restored the historical and cultural memory of our people, developed a sense of national identity, strengthened the desire for independence in the light of the Azerbaijani ideology and laid the foundation for its realization in the near future. When it regained its independence in 1991, the modern Republic of Azerbaijan showed its commitment to the ancient traditions of statehood, and as the political and spiritual successor of the Democratic Republic, adopted its tricolor flag, coat of arms and anthem. Our people have been solemnly celebrating May 28, the day of the Republic"s independence, as the Republic Day. After the restoration of Azerbaijan"s state independence, with the return of Heydar Aliyev to the country"s leadership, a real turn occurred in the socio-political, social, economic, scientific and cultural life of Azerbaijan, international relations, the process of state building in accordance with scientific principles, international norms and principles. Today, the worthy successor of the great leader, President Ilham Aliyev, has brought Azerbaijan to greater heights on the path to independence, and our country is recognized as a strong state throughout the world.
