A QUESTIONNAIRE SURVEY AMONG THE STUDENTS OF THE FACULTY OF MATHEMATICS OF SSU DUE TO CONTROL THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION
For more than a year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the educational process in higher education institutions has been carried out in the form of distance learning. A questionnaire survey was conducted among second, third, fourth and fifth year students of the Faculty of Mathematics of Sumgayit State University in order to control the quality of education. Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, Associate Professor Zafar Huseynov said that the COVID-19 pandemic has led to fundamental and new changes in the teaching and learning activities of teachers and students as a whole. Students both went online and had to keep social distance from friends and family. Of course, the adaptation of some students and teachers to the new format of education has created some difficulties. We wanted to learn the views of students of our faculty on distance education. For this purpose, together with Maftun Heydarova, associate professor of the Department of Mathematics and its teaching methods, we prepared a survey on distance learning for students and sent it to students. After getting the results, we learned what students love about the current education system and what they want to change.
A survey of a total of 416 students found that while most students preferred university education, very few chose distance education. While some of them complained of equipment failures, the vast majority felt that distance education was important in terms of low risk of infection. Again, the vast majority of our students said that they received timely information about changes in the distance learning process, appreciated the work of the teaching staff, their teachers helped them in offering resources for home learning, and liked the university's assessment methods. Some students, on the other hand, noted a decline in learning motivation, perhaps because they rated their performance at a moderate level. It should be noted that the majority of students expressed their dissatisfaction with the weak Internet at home. When it comes to liking distance education, there is considerable disagreement. Thus, almost half of them liked the distance form of education, while the other half did not like this form of education.
Maftun Heydarova, Associate Professor of the Department of Mathematics and its Teaching Methods, noted that during the new distance learning, it is necessary to study the high level of ability of students and teachers of our faculty to provide the necessary tools, resources and services to ensure the organization of comfortable and productive work in the digital environment and the implementation of the distance learning process. We did this among students and plan to conduct a similar survey among teachers in the near future.
Our research showed that despite the unexpected and short transition of our university to distance learning, on the one hand, students are ready to use distance learning technologies in the educational process, on the other hand, there are certain technical difficulties in their application. We have also prepared an article covering the results of the survey, which will be published in the Scientific News Journal of Sumgayit State University. Those interested can read the article in the next issue of the magazine.
