On May 28, 1918, the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, the first secular democratic state in the Muslim East, was established. The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was the first parliamentary republic, legal and secular state in the Turkish and Islamic world. May 28 has been celebrated as a public holiday in our country since 1990. On the occasion of this holiday, a series of events are held at Sumgayit State University.

They also noted that at the beginning of the 90s of the 20th century, Azerbaijan regained its independence as a result of the collapse of the former USSR. National leader Heydar Aliyev, who came to the political leadership of the republic in 1993 at the insistence of the people, made our independence even more eternal and irreversible. The policy carried out by the Great Leader brought back the historical and cultural memory of our people, developed the national self-consciousness, and created a foundation for the strengthening of the dreams of independence in the light of the ideology of Azerbaijanism in the near future. The traditions of parliamentarism formed during the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic and contributed to the progress and rising of our country. President Mr. Ilham Aliyev signed the Decree on the declaration of 2018 as the "Year of the Azerbaijan People"s Republic" in the Republic of Azerbaijan.

During the past period, the Azerbaijani people were able to preserve many of the attributes of national statehood. Today, under the leadership of Mr. Ilham Aliyev, our country has become developing, modernizing state in the world. The achieved successes strengthen the position of Azerbaijan in the international world.
