On February 21, a scientific-practical seminar was held on the topic “Protection of the purity of the Azerbaijani language: problems and solutions” dedicated to the International Mother Language Day at Sumgayit State University (SSU) under the organization of the Department of Language and Literature of the Faculty of Philology. Dean of the Faculty of Philology, Associate Professor Gunel Pashayeva spoke about the history of the development of the Azerbaijani language and reviewed the development path of our language. She noted that the historical services of the National Leader Heydar Aliyev and the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev have contributed to the elevation of the Azerbaijani language to the level of the state language. Gunel Pashayeva noted that increasing attention to activities aimed at wider promotion, teaching and protection of our mother language within the framework of the “Year of Constitution and Sovereignty” is one of the important steps to pass on this important symbol of our sovereignty to future generations. Then, the head of the Department of Language and Literature, associate professor Boyukkhanim Eminli spoke about the history of the International Mother Language Day and the impact of globalization, information and technologies on language, and the importance of language policy, the event continued with the speeches of the speakers. The reports of Aytaj Rustamli, senior lecturer of the Department of Azerbaijani Linguistics of the Azerbaijan University of Languages, “State care for the Azerbaijani language”, Khayala Mugamat, associate professor of the Department of Language and Literature of SSU, “Internationalization of the Azerbaijani language”, and senior lecturer Elnara Ahmadova, “The role of the Azerbaijani teacher in the protection of our native language” were listened to. After the speeches, the students brought to attention not words that have passed into our language from foreign languages, but words that have their equivalents in our native language.
