The event devoted to “June 15- National Salvation Day” was held at Heydar Aliyev Center of Sumgait State University.
Firstly, the participants laid fresh flowers at the bust of the great leader in the foyer of the university and paid a profound respect to the great personality. Then the exhibition was held reflecting the national leader - Heydar Aliyev`s life and activity, rich management experience, far-sighted internal and foreign policy, services in the field of science, education and culture. The event was opened by rector of the university, professor Elkhan Huseynov, Azerbaijan`s national anthem was played. Rector spoke about the importance of June 15, National salvation Day. He said that every nation has unforgettable moments in his history of national awakening, return to memory and eternal independence. June 15, 1993, being connected with the name of national leader Heydar Aliyev, was engraved in the struggle history of Azerbaijani people with Return and Salvation exclamation.
After Azerbaijan gained its independence in October, 1991, internal situation of the country was aggravated, the government was in crisis. Chaos, rampant occured in all spheres of public life. There was power void, dramatic fight began between individuals and groups for power in the country. In the summer of 1993 Azerbaijan stood face to face with the threat of civil war. Heydar Aliyev accepted insistent invitation of Azerbaijani people and authorities, arrived in Baku on June 9. In a short period of time he managed to avoid the civil war. On June 15, 1993 the great leader was elected  chairman of  the Supreme Council of Azerbaijan Republic. Thus, June 15 was included to our history as National Salvation Day. At the request of the public, National Assembly declared this day as a holiday in June, 1997.
Rector also noted that with his return in 1993,  Heydar Aliyev founded crucial points in the country`s social, economic, scientific - cultural life. In accordance with scientific fundamentals, international norms and principles, began the process of building independent state. As a result of urgent measures taken by Heydar Aliyev, on the one hand, important steps have been taken related to formation of the National Army, creation of regular armed forces capable to protect national interests of Azerbaijan, on the other hand, all political and diplomatic means were launched and consequently in May, 1994 ceasefire of vital importance for our country was obtained. In a word, Heydar Aliyev`s ideas pursued in all spheres of political, economic, social and cultural life, became reality of Azerbaijan. His activity and identity has been an integral part of our history. Heydar Aliyev is our genius contemporary. Today we can say with pride that the political legacy of the great leader is successfully continued by his worthy successor , President Ilham Aliyev, independent Azerbaijan state is developing rapidly.  Professor Hasan Sadigov, head of the Department of Philosophy and Law  made a report on “Genius of Heydar Aliyev, getting off Azerbaijan through an ordeal” and spoke about socio-political events of the 90s of the last century, difficult socio-political situation in the country in June, 1993, return of national leader Heydar Aliyev to power for the second time at the request of people and about his salvation mission. He noted that national leader Heydar Aliyev`s return to power on June 15, 1993 is considered to be a glorious page in the state history. Creator of this glorious page is Heydar Aliyev, who played a crucial role in the development, independence and future of Azerbaijan, constantly relying on the people.
Associated professor Amirkhan Isayev, head of the Department of Azerbaijan History, made a report on “National Salvation Day is the beginning of the Azerbaijan renaissance ”, second - year student of the Faculty of Sadig Salimov  spoke on topic “Modern Azerbaijani Youth is reliable carrier of Heydar Aliyev`s heritage”. The speakers noted that during Heydar Aliyev`s leadership our national and moral values were restored, thanks to  his successful internal and foreign policy our country has been saved from the threat of extinction, has made great strides in moving along the democratic development way.
Sevindik Huseynov, chairman of  Sumgait city branch of  the State Committee for Refugees and Immigrants, poet and publicist Avaz Mahmud Laladag talked about Heydar Aliyev`s role in strengthening and preservation of our independence, in achievement success in all areas of the country, integration to international community.
In the end, a documentary film was shown on “June 15- National Salvation Day”.
