On April 26, a scientific republican conference was held in SSU on “Azerbaijan Democratic Republic: its formation, work and historical significance” dedicated to the 100th anniversary of establishment of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.
Several scientists from higher educational institutions of the country participated in the conference. Rector Professor Elkhan Huseynov opening the conference noted that President Ilham Aliyev’s order “On 100th anniversary of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic” reaffirmed that modern independent Azerbaijan is a successor of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. He said that a series of events and conferences are organized at Sumgayit State University. Talking about the historical significance of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic rector emphasized that it was a glorious event in our history. Aiming the establishment of independent, free, democratic republic Azerbaijan Democratic Republic gave back the national consciousness and self-determination of the nation during 23 months activity. In a short period, Azerbaijan Democratic Republic laid the foundation of an important stage in Azerbaijan history with its reforms. During that period, ADR played an important role in the nation’s history for formation of national statehood traditions in democratic state building, economics, culture, education, health care and military fields.
Rector also noted that historical condition in April 1920 did not let our nation to carry on the struggle for independence. Our nation remembered the tradition even after the collapse of the republic and during the soviet period. October 18, 1991 was the continuation of statehood traditions of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. Heydar Aliyev took measures for protection of statehood, sovereignty and stability. The same policy has been carrying on by Ilham Aliyev, now.
Several speeches were delivered in the conference: “Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in international relations system” by Shirkhan Salimov, professor, head of the department of History of Azerbaijan and Eastern European nations; “Our nation restored the lost statehood by establishment of ADR” by Shikar Gasimov, professor, head of the department of Social subjects of Azerbaijan Technical University; “ADR in the first stage of its action (May-November 1918)” by Hidayat Jafarov, professor of Humanitarian subjects department of UNEC. They noted that proclamation of republic on May 28, 1918 was a result of national independence struggle for getting rid of empire bondage. Despite existing 23 months the republic carried out several important measures and managed to introduce it internationally to the world. Azerbaijani language was given a status of official language; essential steps were taken in the fields of culture and education. Establishment of national army, state security and justice agencies and adoption of state symbols were the young republic’s great success. On October 18, 1991 our people regained its independence again with the Constitution act “About independence of Azerbaijan”. Azerbaijan Republic adopted the Democratic Republic’s three colored banner, emblem and anthem as its moral and political successor.
A republican scientific conference dedicated to 100th anniversary of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic received 122 theses from high schools of the country and published as a collection.
